EMBL鈥檚 European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI)
EMBL鈥檚 European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is a world-leading source of freely available biomolecular data, bioinformatics services and training. 聽
EMBL-EBI was founded in 1994 and is part of the , an intergovernmental research infrastructure funded by over 20 member states, prospect and associate member states.
EMBL-EBI鈥檚 co-location with the Wellcome Sanger Institute offers vital synergies. EMBL-EBI maintains the world鈥檚 most comprehensive range of molecular data resources, developed in collaboration with colleagues worldwide, and open to all.聽
EMBL-EBI provides advanced bioinformatics training to scientists at all levels, helping experimental and computational biologists leverage the power of open data.
EMBL-EBI has been leading computational biology research since its inception, with deep involvement in large-scale endeavours such as the Human and Mouse Genome Projects, the , and the among others. The institute also publishes seminal works in genomics, structural biology, chemical biology and single-cell genomics.
An important part of EMBL-EBI鈥檚 mission is to disseminate cutting-edge technologies to industry. Since 1996, EMBL-EBI鈥檚 Industry Programme has been helping companies make the most of advances in bioinformatics. The programme members include pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and agri-food companies. EMBL-EBI also encourages spin-outs with the help of its technology transfer office, EMBLEM.
EMBL-EBI鈥檚 funding comes from EMBL member states, the European Commission, the US National Institutes of Health, Wellcome, UK Research and Innovation and聽 EMBL-EBI Industry Programme members.
